Prog. notes: This piece was conceived after I met a poet, Carlos Estela, while attending a conference in Lima, Peru, earlier this year. At the same time, I wanted to introduce some elements of live performance in my music. For instance, the voice has been transformed and turned into electronic textures using conventional studio techniques, but the poet should also read his poem live from Lima, Peru, during the performance.
A laptop computer will inject some rhythmic elements as a counterpoint to the poetry reading.
The guqin is very important because it creates a link between the artificial sounds of the computer and the materiality of the voice of the poet.
This is my third piece written for a traditional Asian instrument.
Note : if it is not possible for the poet to speak live during the performance, a recording of the reading can be used. Contact the composer.
