Prog. notes: "Focus Exchange" for clarinet and electronics, premiered by Nina Janssen-Deinzer on April 19, 2015 at the Forum of New Music in Germany, is inspired by philosophical thoughts about the dream and reality of the Daoist master Zhuang (365 BC to 290 BC) Chr.). In order to symbolize the dichotomy between dream and reality, the work also opens up musical-heratrical dimensions. The clarinetist appears as an unreal being (as a spirit or a "fairy") that moves as an illusion in space. Electronic and acoustic sounds are closely linked to the "stage actions" in a comprehensive spatial concept. As an alienated linguistic basis serves a section from Zhuang's text "Zhuang Zhou dreams a butterfly". In this, according to Ying Wang,
The fact that Ying Wang raised the tension between dream and reality as the subject of this play depends on her own human and artistic development. The extent to which reality and perception of reality can change can be explained by their relocation to Germany in 2003 and their consequences. Whether she sees her life here together with increasing international recognition as a "dream", or her past in China, in view of her new reality is more and more entangled in the dream, refers to a duplicity that is reflected in Ying Wang's complex work productively.
