Prog. notes: I got the inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s Eldorado for this piece. I’m using this text on both electronics and flute part. But it is edited with other sounds as sonority for my music. My focus on music is to explore constantly changing timbre with fluctuated tempi. Japanese time concept calls “ma”, which is silence
between sounds, including a concept of time and space is also my interest. I call it “a colored silence”, which is a reverberation from sounds in my music. It is sounded at an uncountable tempo, based on breathing. I created sounds like shadow and spirit, searching for ideal musical crystal.
Text from “Eldorado” (1849) by Edgar Allan Poe
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado,
But he grew old-
This knight so bold –
And o’er his heart a shadow
Fell, as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length
He met a pilgrim shadow –
“Shadow”, said he,
“Where can it be –
This land of Eldorado?”
“Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,”
The shade replied, -
“If you seek for Eldorado!”
