Birth Y: 1966 Birth C: CHINA Gender: Male
Dest: Concert
Media Specification: Mixed
Instruments: For a female dancer, solo violin and computer
Prog. notes: This new media work tells the story of Xiaoqing, a young woman who lived in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in southern China. Xiaoqing lived a lonely life. She expressed her feelings through poems and she spent hours everyday looking at her reflection in the mirror or in the brook. She lived a short life and died at the age of 18. Her tomb is surrounded by wintersweet trees by the West Lake in the city of Hangzhou.
This work utilizes interactivities among music, dance and projected images. It keeps the balance between technology and artistic imagination and expression. The solo violin acts as the part of a narrator, and its sound triggers and controls the projected images. The dancer is the embodiment of Xiaoqing’s sentiment while the projected images supply the mood and atmosphere of the whole setting.
