Prog. notes: Twelve Visions of Jesus Christ and Mystical Love is about the poeticism that is implicated in failed love affairs – more specifically, how I personally “fell-out-of-love” with the Christian God. I was once the Christian by the book. My take on faith at the time was in the lineage of what you might call biblical fundamentalism: I was convinced of the literal correctness of the scripture. I believe in creationism. Now I call myself a Darwinian, and I no longer subscribe to the Christian faith in the way that many mainstream churches define it. I fell out of love with the churches’ version of God partly because I found their interpretation of faith to be intellectually fallible. Whether or not I am still a Christian “of some variant” then is beside the point – I do not seek intellectual reconciliation with faith. Rather, I embrace the intellectual disconnect between me and a religion to which I once so entirely devoted myself. This disconnect allows me to behold faith as an aesthetic object, and to focus on the emotional and experiential aspects of faith. The Christian faith is a philosophically beautiful and emotionally profound system. The relationship between man and the Christian God is one of a deep personal commitment. In this work I attempt to reconstruct and deconstruct – from a distance – these moments of profound emotional engagement.
