Prog. notes: The work was commissioned by the accordionist Andrea Carola jaw, which was completed in early 2009. The composition is inspired from the perception of the tides. From the vastness of the sea arises inexhaustible energy for waves whose constant movement is repeated incessantly. Such wave motion is comparable with many other continuously renewing cycles in our world, in which newly-arising persists over the old. Wave in D is written for four-channel playback and accordion. The compositional material revolves around a central tone. Due to my own preference, I have selected the D sound. Octave transpositions occur all available tones of the D, and two micro-tones, each having a quarter-tone on and D (d1). That deviate from equal temperament, micro-intervals are used in electronics, and produce by friction a special tension between instrumental parts and tape. Following on from the infinity of waves my composition embarks on a search for the development of unlimited tones and nuances in a musical tradition with limited Tonvorrat. During the composition process, I have worked closely with the accordionist to explore the sonic possibilities of the instrument and to expand in harmony with the electronics. This created a wealth of nuances that are repeatedly put into new context.
