Prog. notes: Mine to steal was composed for the LOOS ensemble and R&R Electronics with tape. When I got this instrumentation, it reminded me of a standard jazz combo band with a female vocalist. I was trained as a jazz percussionist when I was a teenager, and I played a lot of jazz, pop and rock music at that time. Although I do not want to make music that a general audience would call ‘crossover,’ I do not mind composing music that has been influenced by popular culture. This piece was scheduled to be performed on the last day of Vilniaus Veidai Festival, so I thought if I composed exciting music, it would be fun and fitting for the venue. The original idea of this piece was from Stravinsky’s quote “a good composer imitates, a great composer steals.” I tried to steal ideas from other musical genres such as jazz, pop, rock and heavy metal, while staying true to my own musical language.
